All About Mattress Marketing Gimmicks (SPIN)

Marketing Spin Example #1
Mattress retailers love to show off the features of the mattresses they sell.  One feature that has become almost universal is the "no turn" feature.  They explain to their customers that their mattresses no longer have to be turned over like we used to do our old style two-sided mattresses.  It sounds great especially if you are single or are advanced in age because turning over mattresses can be quite a task.

The truth is, these mattresses aren't upholstered on the other side so you cannot turn it over even if you wanted to.  The real reason manufacturer's started doing this is to reduce the costs of manufacturing it.  By not having to upholster the other side, they have reduced the amount of materials and time expensed to make it.  The consequence to the consumer is that these mattresses will last half as long as it would have had it been upholstered on both sides.  So if your last mattress was upholstered on both sides and it lasted ten to twelve years, now a similar one-sided mattress is likely to last only five to six years.

Marketing Spin Example #2
Another way in which manufacturers have reduced the cost of manufacturing is to eliminate the box spring and then spin it as a benefit to the consumer.  Most people still call the box below the mattress a box spring.  The truth is, virtually no mattress manufacturer makes a box spring any more.  The accurate term for what is used to support the mattress is foundation.  Box springs used to have springs in them and were designed to lengthen the life of the mattress by providing shock absorption for the mattress above.  By eliminating the coil springs, they've reduced the cost of production.  The spin they use is that by eliminating the springs, they've removed motion transfer.

To illustrate, take a quick look at the two pictures below.  The picture on the left is the underside of a 41 year old box spring.  As you can see, the box spring has springs inside and is constructed of large heavy wood.  This box spring weighed in excess of 90 pounds!  On the right is a picture of a modern foundation.  It weighs less than 30 pounds!

This is a picture of a forty year old box spring the likes of which isn't made anymore.  This was a pure quality product.
This is a one year old modern foundation attempting to mimic a box spring.  This is pure junk made of cardboard.

Marketing Spin Example #3
As already touched on in our AA Mattress Warranties page, polyurethane foam is plastic foam.  The chief characteristic of poly is that it softens and body impresses with use and it does this very quickly.  We posted Tempur-Pedic®'s warranty where it states, "It is understood that this limited warranty does not include a normal increase in softness of the TEMPUR® pressure relieving material™."  If Tempur-Pedic®'s "genuine TEMPUR™" poly will soften, what does that say about all other Polyurethane?  Unfortunately, polyurethane is the main padding and quilting material in all mattresses today.  Many years back mattress manufacturers used natural cotton fibers for padding and cushioning and it was very durable.  By today's standards, cotton is too expensive and poly is extremely cheap in comparison.  In order for mattress manufacturers to cover themselves from the obvious problems associated with poly, they exclude softening and body impressions from coverage in their warranties.

They also spin these problems by claiming that they are normal. Here is a publication put out by the Better Sleep Council.

The problem with this publication is that the Better Sleep Council contradicts themselves here.  Notice that they claim that the foams used in mattresses are "technologically advanced" and that body impressions are "normal."  If the foams and fibers are so technologically advanced, then why do they mat down?  They advance the notion that if you rotate your mattress from "end-to-end and from top-to-bottom" (arent' they the same thing?) that the body impressions will go away.  This is ridiculous.  Body impressions develop where the sleeper lies.  Unless people sleep across the bottom of the mattress at the feet and again at the head, body impressions will not go away.  Secondly, they promote that this is healthy and then tell you how to get rid of them.  This publication is a pathetic joke and represents colossal spin.

Marketing Spin Example #4
Foam encasing a mattress is the latest example of producing a cheaper product and spinning it as an improvement in quality.  An example is seen here.

Manufacturers and retailers claim that by foam encasing the innerspring unit, they have increased the sleep surface and created a superior sitting edge.  First of all, they produce no supporting evidence that it increases the sleep surface.  Secondly, if you've read above that polyurethane foam softens and that Tempur-Pedic®'s warranty proves this, the edges of these mattresses will soften substantially and quickly if sat on daily.  The real reason mattresses are foam encased is not to firm the edge because, obviously, this will not last long.  Instead it is a design to reduce the amount of steel springs used.  Spring steel is expensive next to plastic foam and this design reduces the amount of steel used by eighteen percent.

Latex foam mattress manufacturers do this also.  By foam encasing the latex, they've reduced the amount of latex and thus reduced the costs to produce the mattress.  An example is displayed below.

This foam encasement is four inches wide.  A four inch wide polyurethane foam boarder constitutes a 22% reduction in the amount of latex used!  There is never a reason to foam encase a latex mattress except to reduce its cost of production.

Marketing Spin Example #5

Here is an illustration of Tempur-Pedic®'s Dual AirFlow™ System.  They claim it "increases air circulation and responsiveness," whatever that means.

This is a more realistic example an "air flow system."  This very expensive mattress was disposed of by the owner after just seven years.  In order for Tempur-Pedic® to convince the consumer to fork over an extra five hundred dollars, they convey the idea that air will flow under the Tempur® material.  Obviously this is hardly the case.

Hopefully we've done a good enough job documenting these things so that you can now see that the mattress industry is filled with deceptive marketing gimmicks commonly referred to as marketing spin.  The obvious result of all this spin is that mattresses don't last very long.

Don't fall for these measures of deception.  Get yourself a Perfection Sleep System today and get yourself pure quality without marketing gimmicks and get the last mattress you will ever own!  In the long run, a Perfection is your least expansive mattress.  Click here to order today!
