All About Latex

What we know of as latex rubber starts out as the sap of a Hevea Brasiliensis tree shown here.  This natural latex rubber is then molded and baked into solid latex rubber foam.

Latex rubber foam is the highest quality cushioning material available.  Therefore, latex foam rubber mattresses make the longest lasting best supporting mattresses.  Many have testified that they've had their latex mattresses over forty years!

Sound ridiculous?  Remember, this is an evidence based web site and we don't make claims we cannot back up with evidence.

Recently we delivered a new mattress to one of our customer's homes and when we removed her old mattress we noticed it was an all latex mattress.  We inquired into how long they had used this mattress and after some thought, the couple reported that they used this mattress for 41 years!  When we brought it back to our store, we took pictures of it and removed the law label to show you that indeed it was very old.  The customers reported that the only reason they were replacing it was because it had developed a rip in the cover.  After 41 years it had no body impressions and had not softened.

This is the picture we took after we ripped away the cover underneath to expose the latex.  As you can see the latex is still whole and usable.  Also notice how thin this mattress was.  Only five inches thick.  More on that later.
This is a picture of the rip in the cover that was the reason the customer was replacing it.  They used a mattress pad to disguise the rip and were still enjoying the support of the mattress.

This is the law label we removed from this mattress.  It clearly says that the mattress is made of latex rubber foam.
This is the testimonial that the customer wrote for us testifying that she purchased the mattress in 1965.

Here is another example of a latex mattress that lasted a long time.  We weren't able to get the customer to write a testimonial but she said it was close to 40 years old.  Notice that it is the same law label as the one above.  Back 40 years ago Sears, Roebuck & Company was about the only place in Roanoke, VA to buy a mattress.

Here is one more example of a long lasting latex mattress.  Again, as you can see, it was purchased from Sears and this woman told me it was about 35 years old.  It didn't have a law label so we removed the point-of-purchase label.  Notice that the label says the mattress was five inches thick.  All these old latex mattresses were only five inches thick.  Why so thin?  Mattresses today are 10, 12, 14 inches thick.  If you go to a showroom and look at a "latex" mattress, they too will be very thick.  So why were these old mattresses so thin?  Answer: latex is extremely expensive so making it thin 40 years ago kept the price low.  Today a queen size  latex mattress ten inches thick or thicker should retail for around $3000 and up.  Otherwise, if it retails for $1200 to $2000, it is not all latex.  This is very important to take into account when shopping for latex mattresses.  Most latex mattress manufacturers use cheap polyurethane foam to thicken and encase their latex mattresses to make it as thick as the consumer expects while keeping the price low by using only minimal latex.  These "hybrid" latex mattresses will not last as long as an all latex mattress.

If three examples aren't enough here is one more.  This one was probably 40 years old also.  To prove it just look at the price.  This was a twin in this case and if you were to buy a mattress today of similar quality it would cost around $1000 for the set.

In all cases these mattresses were replaced because they had gotten too old looking, stained, or the cover material had worn out.  On average we hear from about a dozen people per year testifying they've had their old latex mattress 22 years or more.  Now you can probably see why we utilize latex as the support base in our Perfection Sleep System®.  But the best part is you can use your Perfection beyond 40 years because you can replace the top material.  Order your Perfection Sleep System today by clicking here !
